Army career
John enlisted in The Royal Anglian Regiment in 1966 and after a period of training joined The 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment in Cyprus in March 1967.


In October 1970, John transferred to 'A' Company for The 2nd Battalion's first tour in Belfast.


He gained promotion to Lance Corporal and then Corporal in February 1972.
